Christine Chubbuck shot herself on July 15, 1974, and following that, multiple speculations have risen. On the morning of July 15, she arrived at Channel 40.

None of Chubbuck’s colleagues saw any reason to question her decision to change the running order of her show named Suncoast Digest, which would open with a report on a local shooting rather than an interview.

Suncoast Digest aired at 9.30 am, but within minutes the team beat a technical hitch when the prerecorded VT failed to proceed. There followed a moment of dead air until Christine returned to her script. 

She even said, “You are going to see another first: an attempted suicide.” Following that, Chubbuck took a .38 caliber Smith & Wesson revolver from her bag and shot herself behind her right ear. Thousands of viewers were watching the live television, and all of them witnessed the disturbing moment.

After her death, it was discovered that Christine had written a complete script for her program, including a third-person account to be read by a colleague after the incident, which listed her condition as “critical.”
