from Playboy centrefold to Julian Assange's number one fan
Perhaps Anderson's most controversial move yet, however, is her support of the Wikileaks founder Julian Assange, whom she has described as a "hero".
Assange is currently living in the Ecuadorian embassy in London, to avoid extradition to Sweden, where he is wanted for questioning in relation to rape accusations.
“It’s crazy that Julian is still being held as a political prisoner — after the UN has stated (and recently for a second time) that there is no reason for his detention and has ordered that the UK and Sweden release him,” Anderson told People magazine in 2016. “Julian is an editor and a publisher,” she added. “There are laws in place to protect him. But they are not being applied. He still cannot leave the Embassy of Ecuador in London while elaborate plots against him and made-up sexual allegations could result in him being extradited to the US — where he would not be treated fairly — because of his exposure of truths.”
She was even more expansive in a blog post on March 30: "My relationship with Julian - it's no secret," she wrote. "He is one of my favourite people and he might be the most famous, most politicised refugee of our time.
"Famous for being persecuted is not a position of power but a position of vulnerability. I am concerned.
"Julian is a human being who is extremely empathetic and cares deeply about the world. And because of his work he has made some powerful enemies in a few countries, America especially, by exposing them.
"Julian is trying to free the world by educating it. It is a romantic struggle. I love him for this."
