John Cazale was an American actor who is best known for his roles in five films released between 1972 and 1978, all of which were nominated for the Academy Award for Best Picture. He is also known for his collaborations with director Francis Ford Coppola and actor Al Pacino. Cazale was born in Boston, Massachusetts, on August 12, 1935. He attended high school in nearby Newton, Massachusetts, and then studied acting at the Neighborhood Playhouse in New York City. Cazale made his film debut in 1972's The Godfather, playing Fredo Corleone, the weak-willed brother of Michael Corleone (Al Pacino). He went on to appear in four more films directed by Francis Ford Coppola: The Conversation (1974), The Godfather Part II (1974), Dog Day Afternoon (1975), and The Deer Hunter (1978). All five of these films were nominated for the Academy Award for Best Picture. Cazale's career was cut short when he was diagnosed with lung cancer in 1977. Years after his death he appeared in a sixth feature film, The Godfather Part III (1990) in archive footage. That film, like all of the films Cazale appeared in, was nominated for Best Picture.
