John Frusciante was born March 5, 1970 in Queens New York City, New York. He is best known as the guitarist for the rock band Red Hot Chili Peppers. First given a guitar by his stepfather, Frusciante taught himself how to play guitar, and for the next several years he would spent all of his spare time practicing and listening to many artists who would influence his style of playing, including Jimi Hendrix and Frank Zappa. Frusciante became a big fan of a local band called Red Hot Chili Peppers when he heard them at 15 years of age. At the age of 16 Frusciante left school and home to become a full-time musician. He had even intended to audition as a guitarist for Frank Zappa but “chickened out.” At a Red Hot Chili Peppers concert, John met Chili Peppers’ guitarist Hillel Slovak. Over the years John also met Anthony Kiedis and Flea, and began to come in contact with the band regularly. When Hillel Slovak died of a heroin overdose on June 27, 1988, Jack Irons, the Chili Peppers’ drummer at the time, also left, as he and Slovak were best friends and Slovak’s death was a huge shock to Irons and Frusciante became a part of the Red Hot Chili Peppers—Frusciante was only 18 years old at the time. Frusciante developed serious drug habits while touring with the band. Not only was Frusciante smoking large amounts of marijuana, but he was using heroin and was on the verge of full-scale addiction. He left the band for a time, but couldn’t kick the habit on his own. After his friend River Phoenix died in October 1993, John became more depressed. In 1997, he entered rehab and later rejoined the Red Hot Chili Peppers. He has since recorded two more albums with the Chili Peppers, Californication (1999) and By The Way (2002), both commercial successes. Over the years, John Frusciante has also released solo albums, the most recent of which are To Record Only Water For Ten Days (2001) and Shadows Collide With People (2004) as well as Will To Death on the Record Collection label.
