NCIS Canceled After Season 16? Inside The Odds For A Season 17

Publish date: 2024-04-30

NCIS might be one of CBS’ most popular shows, but it is not immune to cancellation rumors. Between Pauley Perette’s exit last year and all of the speculation surrounding Mark Harmon’s uncertain future, there is plenty of talk that the show will not reach Season 17.

But what are the odds that CBS keeps the show on air for another season?

Despite the rumors, there are good reasons why CBS will approve NCIS for Season 17 – and beyond.

For starters, the show’s ratings continue to run high. Over the past several years, most networks have been happy with an 85 percent drop in viewership over the course of a season.

This is largely due to so many people cutting cable for streaming services like Netflix and Hulu.

According to Carter Matt, NCIS has only witnessed an 8 percent drop in ratings between Season 15 and 16, which bodes extremely well for another run. In fact, the series is still pulling a little over 12 million viewers in Season 16.

Good ratings are not the only factor to consider. After all, the show will not go on if the cast members decide to call it quits. For a show that has been on air for 16 seasons, this a possibility moving forward.

The biggest question mark, of course, involves Harmon’s future. The actor, who serves as executive producer on two different shows now, is rumored to be thinking about stepping away from his role as Leroy Jethro Gibbs.

Without Harmon, the series would be hard pressed to continue for another season.

Fortunately, Gibbs’ lucrative contract extends for one more season, and it is unlikely that he will opt out early. What happens beyond Season 17 is another matter, but it looks like the series will be safe for at least one more season.
