Woman slams Deloitte graduate salaries as firm reveals how much entry-level staff earn

Publish date: 2024-04-15

A prominent Australian TikTokker has exposed why millenials are turning their backs on corporate jobs, as one of the country’s biggest professional services firms reveals how much its graduates will take home this year.

Wage data released by Deloitte shows auditing graduate staff on the 2022 program will only be earning $61,000 a year.

Next year’s crop of graduates can expect to earn only $2000 more.

Principals in certain fields and industries will be taking home wages of up to $220,000 a year or more.

But the figures have been slammed by the prominent TikTokker, who has called the release “a PR disaster”.

“Working at a ‘Big 4’ consultancy job is not a normal job,” the woman, known as “Gowokegobrokeaus”, told her viewers.

“They demand basically to devote your life to them.

“They make their graduates work 12-14 hours a day and they’re paying them $65,000.”

The woman called it “modern day slavery” as the graduates were billed at “$2-300 an hour”.

“And how much do they pay them – $20 an hour? Tell me how it makes sense,” she said.

“This is why I hate big business and why people are flocking away from large corporations in record numbers – because they’ve realised they are getting absolutely rorted.”

At the higher end of the scale, senior analysts in the auditing division can take home up to $81,000 a year, while directors on the consulting side can expect to earn $190,000.

Deloitte Australia’s chief human resources officer, Tina McCreery, said the company had a record number of applications and acceptances this year, with over 35,000 applications and 1,200 acceptances to date.

“We have a graduate retention rate of 87 per cent in the first year,” she said.

“We have a good track record of retaining graduates over at least the first few years of their career, and in many cases for the long term.

“If they leave the firm, it is typically after developing a core base of skills to pursue career paths in industry or to return to university for further study.”

Ms McCreery said graduates typically progressed to the most senior level within one-two years.

“Pay for these roles typically starts between $65,000 and $75,000. Regular career progression opportunities continue throughout a career at Deloitte,” she said.

Asked about evidence graduate employees were happy with their salary, Ms McCreery pointed to the vast number of awards – including AAGE Grad Recruiter of the Year, AFR GradConnection Most Popular Internship and third in the AFR GradConnection list of Top 100 Employers – Deloitte had received.
